Sillón Vodöl, Coop Himmelblau 1989
En el diseño del sillón Vodöl, Coop Himmelb(l)au promulga el mismo cuestionamiento al orden formal del movimiento moderno que manifiesta en su arquitectura. Esta reformulación del “Fauteuil Grand Confort”, diseñado en 1928 por Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret y Charlotte Perriand, altera su disposición original mediante gestos compositivos que buscan superar las convenciones tradicionales para incubar experimentalmente nuevas formas.
El mueble es resultado de un ejercicio de segmentación de Coop Himmelblau, donde los elementos son analizados previamente como entidades de formas autónomas. Para el proceso compositivo se utilizan soportes no convencionales y diagonales inusuales. La interacción ejecutada por Coop Himmelblau entre los elementos componentes que mutaron su forma, alcanza una complexión no carente de ambigüedad.
El soporte estructural del diseño de Le Corbusier fue trabajosamente alterado para alcanzar una expresión propia, mediante la estudiada deformación del continente de hierro.
El perfil doble te inferior que actúa como soporte del cuerpo principal, es una alegoría a la arquitectura de Mies Van Der Rohe. La inclinación se obtiene colocando un pie soporte en sólo uno de sus extremos. Esa alteración no casual, permite acentuar la dispersión visual y a la vez altera la lógica del diseño.
El resultado final construye una entidad atípica, de disposición alterada e incierto confort. En este ejercicio, Coop Himmelblau logra superar el orden establecido en el diseño de muebles, pero no mucho más que eso.
El ejercicio de segmentación aplicado sobre el sillón Fauteuil se ordena en un proceso posterior que emplea diagonales inusuales, soportes no convencionales y una estudiada deformación del continente de hierro que permite superar las convenciones tradicionales en el diseño de muebles.
Realizado en acero pulido y barnizado con tapicería de cuero, el diseño de Coop Himmelblau conjuga el uso de materiales de uso común en arquitectura, como el perfil de acero inferior, con otros habituales de diseño industrial. La estructura de soporte de 2.00 metros de ancho supera cualquier dimensión conocida para una pieza de una plaza. Las dimensión final es de 200 x 78 x 90 (42 al asiento)

Coop Himmelblau no sólo ha querido aligerar y desmaterializar la arquitectura, sino también desdibujar las fronteras entre el diseño y el arte. Esta pieza destruye y deconstruye la emblemática silla Fauteuil Grand Comfort Chair de Le Corbusier (1928) colocando el asiento sobre una viga de I. Alineado con los principios deconstructivistas de asimetría, contradicción e inestabilidad, Vodöl ha sido interpretado como una sátira del mobiliario moderno. Su nombre -por la palabra en dialecto vienés para sillón, que en francés es fauteuil- refuerza la conexión con Le Corbusier. ©Art Institute Chigago
